癌症患者发生营养不良是多种因素共同作用的结果。摄入减少、吸收障碍、代谢紊乱以及静息能量消耗（REE）增加是导致营养不良的主要原因。癌症患者营养不良的发生率高于良性疾病患者，且后果更为严重。营养不良的癌症患者共病和并发症更多，医疗费用更高，生存时间更短，对肿瘤控制治疗的耐受性和敏感性降低。因此，癌症患者更需要营养治疗，营养治疗应成为癌症必要的基础治疗以及一线治疗手段。营养支持团队（NST）应成为癌症多学科综合治疗 [从多学科协作诊疗（MDT）到整体整合管理（HIM）] 的核心成员。
